Authentic Swedish Chokladbollar (Chocolate Oat Balls)

Authentic Swedish Chokladbollar (chocolate oat balls) rolled in coconut – traditional Nordic no-bake fika treat | Swedish Cravings

Rich, intensely chocolatey, perfectly soft, and rolled in coconut—these are the ultimate Swedish Chokladbollar, made with browned butter and traditional Swedish flavors.

Few homemade treats are as deeply loved in Sweden as Chokladbollar. Found in cafés, bakeries, schools, and homes across the country, these no-bake chocolate oat balls have become one of Sweden's most iconic fika treats.

At Swedish Cravings, we've taken the traditional family recipe and refined it with a few small techniques that create a noticeably richer, smoother, and more luxurious chocolate flavor while staying completely authentic.

The result is a Chokladboll that's soft, fudgy, deeply chocolatey, and impossible to stop eating.

A Swedish Childhood Tradition

Ask almost any Swede about Chokladbollar and you'll probably hear a childhood story.

For many of us, they're one of the very first recipes we ever learned to make. No oven, no complicated techniques—just simple ingredients mixed together by hand before rolling each ball in coconut.

Today they're still one of Sweden's most popular homemade fika treats and are enjoyed by every generation.

The Swedish Cravings Secret

Great Chokladbollar aren't just sweet.

They should have a rich chocolate flavor, a soft melt-in-your-mouth texture, and just enough chew from the oats.

Our version uses five small upgrades:

  • Browned butter for rich caramel notes.
  • Dutch-process cocoa for deeper chocolate flavor.
  • Strong freshly brewed coffee to enhance the cocoa.
  • A pinch of flaky sea salt to balance the sweetness.
  • Chilling overnight to develop the flavor completely.

None of these ingredients overpower the traditional recipe.

They simply make every bite taste richer and more memorable.

Ingredients

  • 150 g unsalted butter
  • 150 g rolled oats
  • 110 g granulated sugar
  • 40 g light brown sugar
  • 35 g Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla sugar (or 1 tsp pure vanilla extract)
  • 2 tbsp strong freshly brewed coffee, completely cooled
  • ¼ tsp flaky sea salt
  • 30 g finely grated dark chocolate (70%)
  • 1 tbsp heavy cream (optional, for an even creamier texture)

For Rolling

  • Unsweetened shredded coconut

Optional:

  • Swedish pearl sugar
  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • Finely chopped roasted hazelnuts

Instructions

Step 1 – Brown the Butter

Melt the butter over medium heat.

Continue cooking until it turns golden brown and smells wonderfully nutty.

Remove immediately from the heat.

Allow it to cool until just lukewarm.

Step 2 – Mix the Chocolate Base

Combine:

  • Granulated sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Cocoa powder
  • Vanilla
  • Sea salt

Pour in the browned butter.

Add:

  • Coffee
  • Grated dark chocolate

Mix until smooth.

Step 3 – Add the Oats

Fold in the rolled oats.

Mix thoroughly until every oat is coated.

If the mixture feels slightly dry, add the tablespoon of heavy cream.

Step 4 – Chill

Cover the bowl.

Refrigerate for 45 minutes.

The mixture will become much easier to shape.

Step 5 – Roll

Roll into balls approximately 3 cm in diameter.

Immediately coat each ball in shredded coconut.

Step 6 – Chill Again

Refrigerate for at least two hours.

For the very best flavor and texture, leave them overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do authentic Swedish Chokladbollar contain coffee?

Yes.

Most traditional Swedish recipes include a small amount of strong coffee because it enhances the chocolate flavor without making the treats taste like coffee.

Can children eat them?

Absolutely.

If preferred, replace the coffee with milk.

Can I freeze Chokladbollar?

Yes.

Freeze them in an airtight container for up to three months.

Should I use coconut or pearl sugar?

Both are traditional in Sweden.

Coconut is by far the most common coating, while pearl sugar is a classic alternative found in many cafés and homes.
